We’re not talking about something as advanced as Will Robinson’s robot when it comes to those being used to assist in surgeries at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

However, those who remember the 1960s television series may be surprised at what modern medical robots can do.

Silver Cross has averaged about 1,000 surgeries during the past three years using what is commonly, and somewhat erroneously, referred to as robots.

They don’t walk and talk as Will’s did, but they greatly help surgeons in performing certain procedures.

About 80 hospitals in the Chicago area have a daVinci Robotic Surgical System, according to the manufacturer’s website, and about 570,000 daVinci-related surgeries were performed last year worldwide
